If you’re looking for new music then look no further than The Vampire Diaries. Yes, you heard that right, The Vampire Diaries. Weird as it sounds, it has the best music going around and I have found so many tunes from tuning in every week. My playlist is now clocking in at 75 songs and the show hasn’t even finished yet!
We’re currently up to season 7 but let’s see if I can summarise the show in a few sentences…One girl, two vampire brothers, one epic love triangle. Ok that was actually quite easy. I’ll elaborate. Elena Gilbert is your typical (human) teenager before she meets Stefan Salvatore and his brother Damon. They’re vampires but Stefan seems like a nice guy and Damon seems rather evil. But in an exciting and unexpected twist, that’s not necessarily the case. The brothers’ story is complicated and there’s so many twists and turns but it’s a pretty exciting ride. There’s vampires, witches and werewolves and even the occasional doppelganger.
Music wise, there’s a bit of everything. But seeing as I am partial to a soppy love song, you might find a few in this list. It’s taken a bit of time but I’ve whittled those 75 songs down to my absolute faves. So, friends, lend me your ears…
BLOODSTREAM – STATELESS (Season 1 Episode 22)
As a member of team Delena, this was the moment we were all waiting for! Damon and Elena have a moment on the porch and they kiss. But then all our hopes are dashed as it turns out to be Katherine. Gotta love some doppelganger hijinks.
BREATHE AGAIN – SARA BAREILLES (Season 2 Episode 4)
Flashback fun! We get to see Katherine back in the old days moments after the brothers die. Katherine shows that she really loves Stefan, just as Stefan says that she is incapable of love. Woops, great timing Stefan.
KISS ME – ED SHEERAN (Season 4 Episode 7)
A lot of these songs come from Delena moments and this is the ultimate one! It was playing when Elena and Damon are dancing by the fire and then it turns a bit hot and heavy! Oh and Caroline and Stefan realise that Elena is sired to Damon but let’s not talk about that.
BELONG – CARY BROTHERS (Season 4 Episode 23, Season 6 Episode 7)
This one’s a favourite of mine (and the producers!) It’s been used twice, both in some huge Delena moments. We first hear it when Elena tells Damon that he is the worst choice for her but that she loves him. We then hear it again after Elena loses her memories and Damon is trying to convince her that they had an epic love story.
DON’T LET ME GO – RAIGN (Season 5 Episode 21)
This was a shocking scene – and the song is so iconic in it. I can’t think of the scene without thinking of this song. It’s when Stefan dies. Caroline is sitting with him and crying out for help. Stefan passes through Bonnie and realises that he has died.
UNBREAKABLE – JAMIE SCOTT (Season 6 Episode 6)
There’s a lot riding on this moment. Elena starts to believe she once loved Damon. Meanwhile he walks to her door slowly hoping that once he sees her the compulsion will break and she will remember that she once loved him.
ANOTHER LOVE – TOM ODELL (Season 6 Episode 7)
I actually only downloaded this song because it was playing in one of my favourite scenes, but now I genuinely love it! It’s on when Damon is reliving his favourite moment with Elena, they are standing in the pouring rain… ‘promise me this is forever.’
LOST – KRIS ALLEN (Season 6 Episode 9)
This song absolutely fits this scene. Bonnie realises she is trapped in the prison world after rushing home to try and meet Damon and Elena in time to be rescued. Poor Bon Bon. Looks like she is stuck there for a while.
YOURS – ELLA HENDERSON (Season 6 Episode 14)
The story arc where Sheriff Forbes has cancer had me in tears nearly every week and this song was playing in a beautiful moment between Stefan and Caroline. Stefan tells Caroline he’s not just helping her through the last days of her mum’s life because he was asked to and they share a beautifully-lit kiss.
ALIVE – GABRIELLE APLIN (Season 6 Episode 14)
This Sheriff Forbes cancer storyline gave us some great music. You’ll hear this one when Sheriff Forbes has a touching moment with Damon before she falls asleep and becomes unresponsive – the best part is when Caroline rushes to the hospital.
WHEN YOU SLEEP – MARY LAMBERT (Season 6 Episode 18)
I’m sensing a pattern here…can you guess I’m a Delena fan? Elena and Damon have a heart to heart about what their life would be like if they were human. But they’re not, except Damon has the cure in his pocket.
WHAT IS LOVE – RHODES (Season 6 Episode 22)
At the end of an emotionally exhausting finale, this song came along to tip me over the edge. It’s playing at the end of the episode when Damon and Elena are saying goodbye. She makes him promise to live his life while she’s gone.
WAITING – AQUILO (Season 7 Episode 3)
My most recent find and I love love love this song! It’s playing in the scene when Caroline tells Stefan she knows about his past with Valerie. But he says he only has eyes for her. Aww how sweet.
There’s lots of other songs that could have made the cut but didn’t. What TV show do you think has good music?
