Whole30 Melbourne

Whole30, as the name suggests, is a diet that’s all about eating whole foods. For 30 days you are only allowed to eat moderate portions of meat, seafood and eggs; lots of veggies; some fruit; natural fats; herbs and spices. The idea behind the challenge is to eliminate foods that could be having a negative impact on your health – such as, sugar, dairy, grains, legumes and alcohol. The rules are pretty strict, and having recently completed the Whole30, I know first hand how difficult it can be to complete. It would have been impossible for me to finish the challenge if I hadn’t done loads of meal-prepping and planning ahead.

One of the hardest parts was trying to find places to eat Whole30 in Melbourne. After doing research, reading restaurant menus and analysing photos of food online, I was able to come up with a list of places in Melbourne that appear to have Whole30 foods. I wasn’t able to try all of these places while I was doing the Whole30 (to be honest I was a little terrified of eating out and accidentally eating the wrong thing) but they all seem to have offerings that you could safely eat. It is always good though to ask your waiter/waitress about how the food is cooked/prepared if you are unsure. Here are places to eat Whole30 in Melbourne:

OLIVER’S

We all know that it’s hard to eat healthy fast food due to a lack of options.Thankfully, we are starting to see more healthy fast food outlets pop-up in the market. Oliver’s is “all about real food, not junk food, providing consumers with Fresh, Natural and Organic food choices.” They offer a good range of meal options for the health conscious and there are a few items on the menu that you could have while on the Whole30.

My Whole30 Picks:

  • Egg Pot
  • Immune Booster Side Salad
  • Sweet Potato Strips

Whole30 Melbourne Oliver's

Locations: Scoresby, Officer, Baxter, Wallan, Geelong, Ballarat

POKE KING

Poke is everywhere right now, and while traditionally these Hawaiian sushi bowls have rice (which is a Whole30 no-no), some places like Poke King let you mix and match your base and toppings. This makes a normally non-compliant Whole30 meal into something that everyone can enjoy.

My Whole30 Picks:

  • Poke bowl with a ‘Fresh Garden’ base, veggies, protein of choice and garnished with some avocado

Location: 385 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy

PALATE

Palate has an entire menu especially for people who are following a Paleo diet. Even though Paleo is not exactly the same as the Whole30, it is close enough that there are some items on this menu that you could safely have while on the Whole30.

My Whole30 Picks:

  • Pick 4 vegetables & 1 Protein

Whole30 MElbourne Palate

Location: 132 Greville St, Prahran

SEROTONIN EATERY

Serotonin Eatery is a healthy cafe offering up nutritious and delicious food. They take healthy living seriously, so much so that they even have an exercise centre. Unfortunately, you will have to wait until your Whole30 is finished before you can try their amazing Positive Pancakes. But don’t fear! Their vegan / vegetarian-friendly menu has some delicious salad and veggie options that are Whole30 compliant.

My Whole30 Pick:

  • Summer Salad

Location:  52 Madden Grove, Burnley

THR1VE

THR1VE offer ‘Paleo lifestyle-inspired gluten-free food with no added sugar’. The best part about THR1VE is that you can customise your lunch or dinner bowl. I’m a big fan of build-your-own-meal places as you can have full control over what goes into your meal. While on a Whole30 diet, that kind of control makes eating out and staying compliant so much easier.

My Whole30 Pick:

  • Green base + RSPCA approved chicken + roasted sweet potato and field mushrooms + brocolli + boiled egg / avocado
