Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life airs this Friday and WE. CAN’T. WAIT. Take a walk down memory lane with us as we remember a few of our favourite (and least favourite) things about Gilmore Girls!
They Shoot Gilmores Don’t They? (Season 3, Episode 7) aka, the 24-hour dance marathon episode. Great hair, great outfits, Kirk dancing like an idiot, and Jess and Rory making eyes at each other all night until Dean explodes in a rage and dumps her. I LOVE watching this episode!
Scene in a Mall (Season 4, Episode 15). This episode gave us so much: Lane moving in with Zack and Brian, Kirk trying to figure out a dog’s name by using random sounds and the best Emily Gilmore rant of all time. She’s babbling about Moby, Pennilyn Lott and Richard’s moustache in the middle of a department store and then makes the sales assistant get her an application! Rant aside, we get to see her being vulnerable when the girls have lunch in the food court (and she eats a Big Mac with a knife and fork).
Nick & Nora / Sid & Nancy (Season 2, Episode 5). Hardcore Jess fans will know that this is the episode that we first meet The Man, The Myth, The Legend. It also features one of Luke’s greatest rants about “jam hands”. This episode is filled with funny little moments (Taylor and his group of Boy Scouts, Lorelai trying to get a kid to buy her coffee after she has a fight with Luke, Jess getting pushed into the lake, Sookie and Jackson getting a bit too enthusiastic over lemons). To me, it’s these little moments that make Gilmore Girls great.
So hard to pick just one episode! But I always seem to come back to Last Week Fights, This Week Tights (Season 4, Episode 21) which is Liz and T.J.’s renaissance wedding. The wedding itself is hilarious, but there’s lots of little bits in this one that I also love. Like Mrs Kim freaking out that Lane is living with two boys; the sweet moment between Jess and Luke when they hug it out; plus Jess wants to run away with Rory!
Least favourite episode
French Twist (Season 7, Episode 7). Christopher and Lorelai head off to Paris together and elope. Season 7 isn’t great on the whole, but of all the episodes this one makes me cringe the most. They have zero chemistry, and they wander around a set pretending to look like Paris, looking for bread. Argh. Is anyone Team Christopher?! And meanwhile, Rory has that awkward encounter with Marty – who pretends not to know her. And before that she goes back to Stars Hollow with those two new friends and they put pink streaks in their hair. No. No. No. Turn it off!
Jews and Chinese Food (Season 5, Episode 15). The only thing worse than life’s awkward moments is having to watch life’s awkward moments on TV. Marty not being able to pay at the Chinese restaurant, Logan offering to pay, Marty professing his love to Rory…no thank you forever goodbye.
Awkward. Depressing. Mind-boggling. All of these words sum up my feelings about A Vineyard Valentine (Season 6, Episode 15). From start to finish it is horrible. Mainly because Luke is horrible. This is not the Luke we know and love from the previous five seasons. This is an alien monster who is so unlikable I wanted to punch him in the face.
I could have chosen any of the above episodes, but some of my least favourite episodes are actually in season 6. When Rory drops out of Yale and moves in with Richard and Emily she becomes a different person and I always find it really hard to watch. I hate seeing the girls fight and be at odds with one another. The only good bit about this storyline is that Jess re-appears and is the only person able to convince Rory to go back to Yale!
Favourite Stars Hollow townie
Michel!! He is the best. He’s snarky and sarcastic and grumpy and I love him so much. He makes me laugh a lot when he gets upset. Some favourite moments with him include the stolen Toblerones, when he does lunges behind the guests at the Dragonfly because he accidentally drank full-fat milk, and when he won’t swear on Destiny’s Child breaking up that he won’t count the blueberries in his pancakes.
T.J. “Guess what is stands for”. Who cares? He’s the ultimate! Whether he’s discussing laps being illusions, being in escrow or the wonders of air pants, he always provides comic relief in a thick New York accent.
Kyle isn’t a townie that we see very often but when we do see him he makes an impression. Although he is Dean’s friend, I don’t hold that against him because he is hilarious and displays more personality in a 5-second scene than Dean did over the entire course of the show. Plus he has a hook for a hand which is like the coolest thing ever.
It’s got to be Babette. So many great quotes….”Location, location, location”, “You gotta give it a little something”, “It’s like it’s on acid”, “Who’s the fox, Patty?” When she runs across the street to Luke clutching her chest it gets me every time. I hear ya, sister! The dynamic duo of Babette and Miss Patty too is a winner.
I love Luke in his flannel, plaid shirts. But season 1 Luke in the denim shirt? Yes!
Lorelai’s unworn wedding dress. It makes me happy! It makes me sad! It makes me angry! So. Many. Feelings. But mostly jealousy cause it’s gorgeous.
Even though this oversized sweater is hideous it’s also kind of adorable. I loved that Rory was so 90s and unfashionable in season 1.
I absolutely love Lorelai’s outfit at the 24 hour dance marathon. Love the vintage look.
In Forgiveness and Stuff (Season 1, Episode 10), Luke makes Lorelai a Santa burger to cheer her up and if you weren’t already in love with Luke, this was the episode to start. He’s grumpy as hell in delivering it, but my god, it’s so swoon-worthy. That it’s followed by him kicking everyone in the diner out so he can drive Lorelai to the hospital (after her dad collapses) makes it even better.
Stars Hollow’s biggest pizza! Rory organises it for Lorelai’s birthday in Happy Birthday, Baby (Season 3, Episode 18). If you look closely, you can see Kirk trying to help (in the image above) even with severe cheese burns. Special mentions: the birthday mallomars, trying wedding cakes at Weston’s, dessert sushi and the take out spread that Rory, Jess and Paris dig into.
In A-Tisket, A-Tasket (Season 2, Episode 13) Sookie prepares the most extravagant picnic basket of all time for the Stars Hollow Annual Bid on a Basket Fundraiser. There are four kinds of pesto, three different desserts, a pineapple-cranberry chutney and the entire basket is an edible pretzel! Ah-mazing.
It’s not specifically a meal, but it’s my dream to eat like Lorelai and Rory and still look like they do (and not the size of a house). From donuts to pies, and burgers to fries, with even some of Al’s pancakes thrown in, I wish I could eat like that. Don’t forget about the rolls too.
Moment that made you LOL the hardest
Last Week Fights, This Week Tights (Season 4, Episode 21). This whole episode makes me LOL the hardest, but especially Liz and T.J.’s Renaissance wedding. The laughs start with T.J. borrowing Luke’s deodorant, it continues with T.J.’s exclamations about dry armpits and air pants as he walks down the aisle, and it concludes with the song the celebrant sings before the vows. Yahtzee, I’m winning! Gilmore silliness at it’s best!
Lorelai grooving to “Shadow Dancing” in the jeep then being busted by Emily in The Fundamental Things Apply (Season 4, Episode 5). Ten points to Lauren Graham for her physical comedy in this scene!
A Deep-fried Korean Thanksgiving (season 3, episode 9). One of my favourite Kirk moments is when he gets a cat and calls him Cat Kirk (naturally). Cat Kirk ends up terrorizing Human Kirk who is forced to hide naked in a bathtub to avoid being attacked. Pretty much any scene with Kirk is hilarious but this one is a standout for me.
So many moments to choose from. I love the Twickham house museum, I love the town meetings, and I love A Film by Kirk. But one of my favourite LOL-worthy moments is rather a random one from season 6, episode 19 I Get a Sidekick Out of You. The whole 58 seats, 62 Koreans gets me every time.
While I do have a soft spot for Logan, deep down I think I’ve always been Team Jess. He’s got that sarcastic sense of humour that I find super appealing, he had great chemistry with Rory right from the start, he gets that reading is sexy, he wrote a book … he’s perfect for her. Yes, he did some dumb stuff like running off without saying goodbye, and then turning up at her dorm and asking her to run away with him. But really, that just adds to the appeal. Team Jess for the win.
I basically had the same tastes as Rory throughout the series. When she liked Dean, I liked Dean. When she crushed on Jess, I crushed on Jess. When she fell for Logan, I fell for Logan. That being said, I think she made a massive mistake going back to Dean. The timing was never right for them but Ress/Jory were clearly the best match. Although, is it still okay if Jess’ uncle is with Rory’s mum? What does that make them? Step cousins?! Forget I said anything…
For me, it’s Jess or nothing. I think out of all of the boyfriends Jess had the most chemistry with Rory. More importantly than that we see him grow and mature throughout the show. I read a great comment online from someone that said that being Team Jess isn’t just about shipping Rory and Jess as a couple. Team Jess encompasses the full character and his growth and arc. I really loved that approach of deciding what ‘team’ you are on. So no matter what happens in these new episodes I will always be Team Jess (regardless of who any of the characters end up with).
#TeamJess for life. If Rory doesn’t end up with Jess I will be seriously disappointed. He may have been a jerk at times early on, but when he matures and gets his life together he makes the perfect match for Rory. I like to think that Logan is to Rory what Christopher is to Lorelai. Both are the rich and charming choice favoured by Richard and Emily, but the girls are more suited to someone a bit more down to earth.
A Year in the Life predictions
I am not totally convinced that Rory is going to end up with Jess or Logan or Dean. But if she does end up with any of them (let’s face it, it’s gotta be Jess), I think it will happen right at the very end. They’re going to make us wait. And I feel like it will be a tease. Like…maybe Rory’s last scene will be with Jess and he will ask her to run away with him again and she will smile, and end scene.
I think Lorelai will get married and Rory will get pregnant. Also, Dean will be wealthy – I just feel it in my bones.
I also think it’s very likely that Rory will not be coupled up at the end of the revival. I’m trying not to guess too much because I don’t want to be disappointed if my predictions don’t come true. So on that note, my prediction is that Hep Alien are international rockstars, Mr Kim is Mayor and Emily adopts Kirk.
I think that Rory will start the series in a relationship with someone else – someone that we don’t know – and that she will find her way back to Jess. There’s one scene in the trailer where she seems to be a bit lost, saying that she could have been a contender. We know that Jess has a proven track record of getting her back on track!
