Sometimes, all it takes is one episode. It probably isn’t even the first episode of the series. Or the second. In fact it’s probably strategically placed mid-season to make sure you keep watching. You know the episode I’m talking about. Where all the tension builds up and you know  it’s about to all blow up. Maybe literally. But from that episode you are totally hooked and wait with baited breath for the next episode. We can probably all pick an episode from a favourite tv show. It’s the one you use to try and sell it to your friends. Well, here’s us putting our selling skills to the test. Beware of spoilers?

Meredith has a feeling. A feeling that she’s going to die. She’s in a miserable slump because she’s in love with Derek, but he’s trying to do the noble thing and work things out with his wife, Addison. And he’s just as miserable. Enter, this episode’s main patient. He’s an idiot who has an unexploded bazooka inside him and the only thing stopping him from blowing up is Cristina Ricci, who plays Hannah, the paramedic who put her hand in his wound to stem the bleeding, having no idea what was actually causing the bleeding in the first place. So she’s got her hand on the bazooka and suddenly it’s Code Black because they’re in the OR, above the main oxygen line and if she moves her hand and the bomb explodes, then the whole hospital explodes. Then Kyle Chandler (from Friday Night Lights) comes in, and he’s from the bomb squad and he’s trying to make a plan to successfully disable the bazooka. Then, Cristina Ricci’s character completely loses the plot, pulls her hand out and….Meredith leaps forward and puts her hand on the bomb! D’oh! And while all this is going on, there are confessions of love (in case they all die) and Dr Bailey is in labour but is refusing to push because her husband was in a car accident and Derek is doing brain surgery on him right next door to the bomb! OMG. So you know, it is highly recommended that you watch the next episode straight away because, hello, cliffhanger!

I LOVE bottle episodes. What’s a bottle episode, you ask? It’s an episode of a TV show that primarily takes place on an existing set with just the main cast members. It’s a way to save a bit of moolah. But it’s not just cost-effective, if written well it’s a fun way to keep the audience engaged and hungry for more. There are classics like The One Where No One’s Ready from Friends and The Chinese Restaurant from Seinfeld. Joss Whedon has also done some great ones for Buffy, Angel and Firefly. If bottle episodes were actual bottles, Cooperative Calligraphy would be a 15 litre water cooler. The creative genius of this episode has the Greendale study group finishing up a project in the library when Annie (Alison Brie) notices that her pen is gone. She chucks a tantrum and insists everyone stay in the study room until the pen and culprit are found. Awkward strip-searches, petty arguments, copious finger pointing and film geek Abed (Danny Pudi) constantly going on about it being a bottle episode make for 22 minutes of hilarity. Also noteworthy: Troy carrying nothing but a small pillow in his backpack, Abed charting the girls’ menstrual cycles, a pregnancy test marketed to black women and the Dean’s (Jim Rash) reaction to the destruction left in the study room.

I’m just going to come out and say it. I am a huge Merlin fan. It’s one of my absolute favourite shows. It’s got it all – it’s fun, it’s serious, it’s often hilarious and it’s got a lot of heart, not to mention some serious eye candy (hello, Lancelot). Merlin is of course about the sorcerer Merlin, faithful servant of Prince Arthur. Set in Camelot where magic is punishable by death, Merlin must keep his powers a secret and try to keep Prince Arthur alive so he can fulfil his destiny and become King Arthur, be the greatest King that Camelot has ever known. It slowly introduces elements of Arthurian legend too so of course we also have Guinevere, Lancelot, Excalibur and the Knights of the Round Table. I have so many favourite episodes but there seems to be one that I keep coming back to mainly because I think it’s where the story really begins. It goes a little something like this…Arthur is sick and tired of being treated like a prince so he decides to compete in a jousting tournament anonymously to prove his worth. With Merlin and Gwen the only people who know of his plans, he hides out at Gwen’s house while the tournament is on. Cue the start of a beautiful love story. Oh and just to keep things interesting, there is also an assassin on the loose in the castle looking for Arthur. Part of the reason I love this show is the banter between Arthur and Merlin and this episode doesn’t disappoint.

This is an episode that all LoVe shippers hold dear in their hearts. There is nothing greater than when your ship gets together and this is THE episode that started it all. It’s the episode that we all wished and dreamed about but never knew if it would actually happen. Veronica Mars, teen private-eye, and Logan Echolls, obligatory psychotic jackass, get together. If that isn’t enough to get you hooked on this show, I don’t know what else will. This episode also has major appeal as JTT (Jonathon Taylor Thomas) guest stars. So for newbies watching the show they will immediately recognise that this is a high-quality show with cameos from only the best in the biz.
